Sony’s announced its first two LTE-capable phones for its Japanese customers — and there’s two of ‘em. The Xperia GX is up first, with a 720p 4.6-inch display squeezed in alongside a new 13-megapixel camera — a first for Sony’s mobile family, and presumably its new CMOS sensor . A 1.5 GHz dual-core processor ensures it should all tick along nicely, while the hardware design follows the curves of last year’s Xperia Arc , this time with a matte finish

Looks like virtual Tupac might have some company. With Kinect , you are the hologram. Besides logging in lots of quality time at a South Korean theme park, the Kinect is now doing double duty at the Human Media Lab of Queen’s University in Canada thanks to a 3D holographic chat system called “TeleHuman.” The setup basically creates a life-size rendering of its subject by using six Kinect sensors, a 3D projector and a cylindrical display.

Ematic clearly isn’t aiming to differentiate itself when it comes to tablet designs, but then again, the company is a devotee of that tried-and-true method of undercutting its competitors’ prices. (Remember that impossibly cheap PMP ?) Its just-announced Android 4.0 slate, the eGlide XL Pro 2, may not be a “standout device” as the outfit proclaims, but it does look and act like a tablet — for a Walmart-friendly $220.

Ruggedized cameras have always been delivered with some kind of compromise — an inflated price tag, bulkier body or sub-par image quality. Now, much as the E-M5 did to tighten the gap among mirrorless cameras, Olympus is introducing a full-featured pro-worthy Tough model. The Tough TG-1 is effectively an XZ-1 in a ruggedized shell — its 12-megapixel 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor, 25-100mm, f/2.0-4.9 4x zoom lens and 3-inch 610k OLED display are all wrapped in a reinforced body, capable of flawless shooting at depths of 40 feet, in temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit) and after a 6.6-foot fall.

Lenovo’s going all-out on Ivy Bridge -based ThinkCentre pro desktop updates this evening, and the centerpiece is the smallest of the lot. The ThinkCentre M92p Tiny — yes, it’s officially nicknamed Tiny — is about as thick as a golf ball at 1.4 inches and ready to tuck behind your display, but packs up to a third-generation Intel Core chip, vPro for IT control and your choice of spinning or solid-state hard drives. The M92p Tiny and a lower-end M72e should arrive in June, although what the respective $799 and $499 prices will get you are still mysteries

The world’s second ( or third ) biggest PC manufacturer has announced plans to invest $800 million in a new mobile product-centric facility. Lenovo wants to get closely involved with the lucrative world of smartphones and tablets, promising that several thousand employees at the new base in Wuhan will focus on new mobile devices for both China and overseas. Lenovo’s pegged to launch the K800 , one the first Intel-powered Android phones, at the end of the month, but this marks a concerted effort to advance both its tablet and phone collections — and offer up more space for those other side projects .
