Got room for another useful utility app on your Android smartphone?  Cosmos is a new mobile app that combines three handy features for Android smartphones : A battery optimizer, a trash cleaner and a very informative security function specific to third-party application permissions. Cosmos officially launches on May 21 , but I’ve been using it for a few days and you can too.

AT&T’s Chicago problem: Why LTE slows down in the Windy City

AT&T’s new LTE network is blazing fast, with recent nationwide studies showing Ma Bell Mobile is beating out archrival Verizon when it comes to bandwidth punch. But independent network tester RootMetrics just released a new Chicago report finding that AT&T’s typical 17 Mbps-plus speeds are more than halved in the Windy City.

Rock band Counting Crows released four tracks of its new album Underwater Sunshine on BitTorrent Monday , complete with artwork and 25 pages of liner notes. Counting Crows singer Adam Duritz told me during a phone conversation last week that he can’t think of a better way to get his music in front of people.

How many of us have gone through numerous batteries for our laptops, because over time aging batteries start to lose their ability to charge? Yep, me too. Well, Stanford’s materials scientist Yi Cui, who founded startup Amprius , is working on a lithium ion battery that could last for 6,000 charge and discharge cycles without degrading below 85 percent, according to some of Cui’s latest research (hat tip IEEE )
